The Lord is always there for us when we suffer from things we cannot control, like the loss of a loved one. But he can only be there for us, if we let him be there. He is too much of a gentleman to push is way into your life if you don't want him there. So if you want him to be there for you in your time of trouble, you have to ask him to be there.
